Waino Aaltonen
Wäinö Valdemar Aaltonen is a Finnish artist and sculptor. Chambers Biography describes him as "one of Finland's leading sculptors". He was born to a tailor in the village of Karinainen, Finland. He became interested in art after being deaf as a child and attended the Turku Art Association drawing school from the age of 16, or more specifically from 1910 to 1915. He spent many years studying painting at this school, but he mostly taught himself to become a sculptor. He learned marble-making techniques from his parents Aarre Aaltonen and by working as a marble apprentice at Hirvensalo. Sculptor Felix Nylund was a replacement teacher at the Turku Art School for one season, and his work inspired the young Aaltonen. A trip from Aaltonen to Italy in 1923 widened his vision of Cubism and the Future. These elements can mainly be seen in his paintings.
