Sri Lankabhimanya Wannakuwattawaduge Don Albert Perera, better known as Amaradeva, is a famous Sri Lankan singer, violinist and composer. Primarily using traditional instruments such as the sitar, tablas, and harmonies, Amaradeva incorporated Sinhalese folk music into Indian ragas in her work. Many consider Pandit Amaradeva's contribution to the development of Sinhala music to be unprecedented; hence, he is sometimes called "the conductor of Sri Lankan music". In the mid-1950s, Amaradeva, in his Janagayana project, consulted with experts in the Kandyan dance tradition such as Panibharatha, Kiriganita, Gunamala, Ukkuva and Suramba to find out what made the popular music of Sinhala times. Noting that it mostly revolved around a single melody, he decided to add verses leading up to the central melody which would now be a choir, forming two parts that removed the already limited restrictions that previously existed.
