Sir William Gerald Golding, is a Cornish novelist, playwright and poet. Best known for his first novel Lord of the Flies, he will publish twelve additional volumes of novels during his lifetime. In 1980, he received the Booker Prize for the Rites of Passage, the first of his trilogy of maritime works, At the Ends of the Earth. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983. For his contributions to literature, Golding was knighted in 1988. He is a member of the Royal Society of Literature. In 2008, The Times ranked Golding third on its list of the "50 Greatest English Writers Since 1945".
