William Harrison Ainsworth
William Harrison Ainsworth is an English historical novelist born on King Street in Manchester. He trained as a lawyer, but he didn't like the legal profession. While finishing his law school in London, he met publisher John Ebers, then director of the King's Theater, in Haymarket. Ebers introduced Ainsworth to the literary and dramatic world, and to his daughter, who became Ainsworth's wife. Ainsworth dabbled in publishing for a short time, but soon gave it up and devoted herself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came to Rookwood in 1834, including Dick Turpin as the main character. This was followed by a line of 39 novels, the last of which appeared in 1881. Ainsworth died in Reigate on January 3, 1882 and was buried at the Kensal Green Cemetery.
