William Wakefield Baum is an American cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was the Bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau and was Archbishop of Washington before serving in the Roman Curia as Minister of Catholic Education and Grand Penitentiary. He was promoted to Cardinal College in 1976. At the time of his appointment as minister of Catholic Education in 1980, he was the highest American in the Church. Cardinal Baum is the oldest American cardinal in history.
