Yury Grigorovich
Yury Nikolayevich Grigorovich was a Soviet and Russian dancer and choreographer who dominated Russian ballet for 30 years. Grigorovich was born into a family with ties to the Royal Russian Ballet. He graduated from the Leningrad Choreography School in 1946 and danced as a soloist of the Kirov Ballet until 1962. Sergey Prokofiev's staging of Stone Flowers and Love Legend earned him recognition as a choreographer. . In 1964, he moved to the Bolshoi Theater, where he was artistic director until 1995. His most famous works at the Bolshoi were the Nutcracker, Spartacus and Ivan the Terrible. He was controversial when he remade Swan Lake to create a happy ending to the story in 1984. In 1995 he was accused of letting the theater stand still and, after much controversy, dismissed. He then choreographed for various Russian companies before settling in Krasnodar, where he created his own company.
