Zakariyya Ahmad is an Egyptian musician and composer. He sang mainly religious songs as a member of several groups from 1919 to 1929, after learning to read the Quran under the famous Egyptian Qur'an teaching Mohamed Salama. However, he became famous when he expanded his repertoire to include popular music, especially those showing the patriotism of modern Egypt's new nation-state. The compositional style of much of his music is strongly influenced by the traditional styles of Egyptian folk music. Famous works include solo works and sheet music, and in 1931 he began composing Egyptian and patriotic love songs for Umm Kulthum. He also began writing operettas in 1924, eventually producing a total of 56 operettas and 1,070 songs. Her father is Egyptian and her mother Turkish and influenced her early love for music.
