Alan Garner
Alan Garner is an English novelist known for his children's fantastic novels and traditional British folk tales. Much of his work derives from the landscape, history and folklore of his home county of Cheshire, in North West England, which is regionally defined and uses the native Cheshire dialect. Born in Congleton, Garner grew up around the nearby town of Alderley Edge, and spent most of his youth in a woodland area known locally as "The Edge", where he quickly developed an interest in culture. A student at Manchester Grammar School, then briefly at the University of Oxford, in 1957, he moved to the village of Blackden, where he purchased and renovated a modern era building called Toad Hall. His first novel, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, was published in 1960. A fantasy children's novel set in Edge, it incorporates elements of local folklore into its core of stories and characters.
