Bess Myerson is an American politician, model and television actress, who became famous in 1945 as the first Miss America who was also Jewish. Myerson is the only Jewish woman to have won this title so far. Its realization, in the aftermath of the Holocaust, is seen as an affirmation of the Jews' place in American life. She is a heroine of the Jewish community, where "she is the most famous beautiful girl since Queen Esther". Myerson appeared regularly on television in the 1950s and 1960s. She was a member of the New York City government and served on presidential committees from the 1960s to the 1980s, and unsuccessfully ran for the United States Senate. Her public service career ended in the late 1980s when she was charged with accepting bribes and conspiracy. She was acquitted after a well-publicized trial.
