It specializes in detective novels, particularly comics, with occasional breakthroughs in science fiction and other genres. Westlake is perhaps best known for creating two professional criminal characters who have starred in a series before: Relentless and tough Parker and John Dortmunder, who appeared in a comedy series. He is a three-time winner of the Edgar Prize, with Joe Gores and William L. DeAndrea being one of the few writers to win the Edgar Prize in three different categories. In 1993, Mystery Writers of America named Westlake the Grand Master, the noblest title given by society.
