Fernando Ferreira Meirelles is a Brazilian director, producer and screenwriter. He is known for co-directing City of God, released in 2002 in Brazil and 2003 in the United States by Miramax Films, which received international critical acclaim. With his work in the film, he was ultimately nominated for an Oscar for Best Director. He was also nominated for the 2005 Golden Globe for Best Director for The Continuous Gardener, which earned Rachel Weisz the award for Best Supporting Actress. He also directed the 2008 adaptation of José Saramago's novel Blindness and the 2011 film 360. In 2019, Meirelles directed and produced the original HBO Joint Venture series in Brazil and also directed The Two. Popes for Netflix.
