Gelsey Kirkland is an American ballerina. Kirkland joined the New York City Ballet in 1968 at the age of 15, at the invitation of George Balanchine. She was promoted to soloist in 1969 and directed in 1972. She went on to play the lead roles in many of Balanchine's great 20th century ballet, Jerome Robbins and Antony Tudor, including the cover of The Balanchine's Firebird, Robbins' Goldberg Variations., And Tudor withered leaves. Balanchine choreographed the Stravinsky version of The Firebird just for her. She left the New York City Ballet Theater to join the American Ballet Theater in 1974. She is perhaps best known to the public for having danced as Clara Stahlbaum in Baryshnikov's television series The Nutcracker in 1977. She left the theater. American Ballet Theater in 1984.
