George Franklin Barber is an American architect best known for his home designs that he markets around the world through mail order catalogs. Barber was one of the most successful late Victorian housing architects in the United States, and his plans have been used for homes in all 50 US states and in other as far away as Japan and the Philippines. More than four dozen barber houses are listed separately on the National Register of Historic Sites, and a few dozen more are listed as Historic Districts. Barber began designing homes in his hometown of DeKalb, Illinois in the late 1880s, before permanently moving his base to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1888. His first widely distributed catalog, Memorial House No. 2, contains plans and plan plans for fifty-nine houses, primarily in the style of Queen Anne, as well as the philosophy of ants.
