Joe Engle
Major General Joe Henry Engle, USAF, Ret. is an American pilot, aviation engineer and former NASA astronaut. He was in command of two shuttle missions, including the STS-2 in 1981, which flew into the program's second orbit. He also made three flights as part of the Shuttle program's approach and landing tests in 1977. Engle was one of twelve pilots who flew an X-15 in North America, an airliner. The test space is operated jointly by the Air Force and NASA. As an X-15 pilot, Engle completed three flights above 50 miles, qualifying for astronaut wings under the US Convention for the Frontier of Space. In 1966, he was selected to join the fifth group of NASA astronauts, to join the Apollo program. He was a backup pilot of the Moon module for Apollo 14 and was originally scheduled as an LMP for Apollo 17. However, subsequent flight cancellations led NASA to choose geologist-astronaut. Harrison Schmitt worked as LMP, replacing Engle. Engle was an experienced space aircraft operator and the last X-15 pilot alive.
