Joseph Salvatore "Skinny Joey" Merlino is an Italian-American gangster who is believed to be the head of the Philadelphia crime family. He came to power in the mid-1990s after being accused of waging a war for control of a criminal organization. He has led the criminal family of gambling, usury and extortion. Compared to other traditional mafia bosses who always avoid the limelight, Merlino regularly contacts the media and the public. He is the son of Chuckie Merlino. With the help of informant Ralph Natale, Merlino was convicted of several RICO crimes, including fraud, illegal gambling and extortion, in 2001, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Since his release in 2011, the FBI and organized crime journalists believe he continues to lead the Philadelphia-South Jersey mafia. Merlino objected to this, claiming that he was retiring from the criminal life. As of 2015, Merlino split her time between South Florida and Philadelphia.
