Louis Zamperini
Louis Silvie Zamperini is an American World War II veteran and Olympic distance runner. He started high school and qualified to go to the United States in the 5,000m race for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, finishing eighth, but not without setting a new lap record. In 1941, he was appointed lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was a bomber with the B-24 Liberator in the Pacific. During a search and rescue mission, Zamperini's plane crashed and crashed into the ocean. After drifting on a lifeboat for 47 days, along with two other crew members, he landed on the Japanese-occupied Marshall Islands and was captured. He was sent to two different prisoner of war camps in Japan, where he was tortured and beaten by Japanese soldiers - especially Mutsuhiro Watanabe - due to the fact that Zamperini was a famous Olympic athlete. Later, he was taken to a new prison camp at a coal factory, and after many struggles, he was finally released.
