In 1969, he received the Pulitzer Prize for Outstanding Photography for a photo of Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King Jr., at her husband's funeral. Sleet was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize and the first African American to win a journalism award. He died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 70 .
