Nelson Roosevelt Gidding is an American screenwriter specializing in adaptation. A long collaboration with director Robert Wise begins with Gidding's script for I Want to Live!, Which earned him an Oscar nomination. His long course in screenwriting adaptation at the University of Southern California has inspired current generation of screenwriters, including David S. Goyer. Gidding was born in New York and attended Phillips Exeter Academy; young, he was friends with Norman Mailer. After graduating from Harvard, he joined the Air Force during World War II as a pilot on the B-26. His plane was shot down in Italy, but he survived; he spent 18 months as a prisoner of war but escaped. Returning from the war, in 1946, he published his only novel, End Over End, which began while he was imprisoned in a German prison.
