Paul Goodman is an American author and public intellectual best known for his social criticism of the 1960s. Born into a New York Jewish family, Goodman was raised by his aunts and sisters and attended New York City College. An ambitious writer, he wrote and published poems and novels before attending graduate school in Chicago. He returned to writing in New York City and took sporadic journalist and teaching jobs, many of which he failed due to his outgoing bisexuality and resistance from WWII. Goodman discovered anarchism and wrote for liberalist magazines. He became one of the founders of movement therapy and brought in patients in the 1950s while continuing to write. His 1960 social critical book, Growing Up Absurd, asserted his importance as an Orthodox cultural theorist. Goodman is known as the "philosopher of the new left" and his anarchist personality influenced the anti-cultural movement and the liberal school of the 1960s
