Robert Rowe Gilruth is an American aerospace engineer and aerospace and space pioneer, he was the first director of NASA's Manned Spaceship Center, later renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. He served on the National Aviation Advisory Committee from 1937 to 1958 and its successor, NASA, until his retirement in 1973. He was involved in the early research on supersonic flight and rocket-propelled planes, then the US manned space program, which includes the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.
