Slater Nelson "Dugie" Martin Jr is an American professional basketball player and coach who served as the game's defender for 11 seasons with the National Basketball Association. He was born in Elmina, Walker County, Texas and played in the NBA All-Star Games seven seasons. Martin was one of the best defensive players in the NBA in the 1950s, playing for the Minneapolis Lakers team under George Mikan who won four NBA championships between 1950 and 1954. In 1956 he joined St. Petersburg. Louis Hawks of Bob Pettit and won another NBA title in 1958. Martin is an alumnus of Jefferson Davis High School in Houston, where he led his school to two State Basketball Championships in 1942 and 1943. He also graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. set a scoring record in 1949 with 49 points. . in a game for the Longhorns against the Catholic University of Texas. During his career with Longhorns, he averaged 12.7 points per game.
