Stanley Tookie Williams III is best known for being one of the original founders and leaders of the Crips gang in Los Angeles, who was executed by lethal injection. In 1971, Williams and Raymond Washington formed an alliance that formed Crips to become the first major African-American street gang in downtown Los Angeles. Williams became a real crime boss and the leading crime boss in the South Central in the 1970s. In 1979, Williams was convicted of killing 4 people in two robberies and sentenced to death. The widely publicized Williams trial and widespread appeals for leniency have sparked a debate over the status of the death penalty in California. On December 13, 2005, Williams was executed by lethal injection after repeated appeals for clemency and a four-week sentence was rejected by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
