Tarana Burke is an American activist from the Bronx, New York, who initiated the Me Too movement. In 2006, Burke began using metoo to help other women with similar experiences defend themselves. More than a decade later, in 2017, #MeToo became a viral hashtag taken up by Alyssa Milano when women started using it to tweet about Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuse allegations. Phrases and hashtags quickly developed into a large-scale and ultimately international movement. Time named Burke, among a group of other prominent activists known as the “silence breakers,” as the Time Person of the Year 2017. Burke was present at these events. Public across the country and is currently Senior Director of Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn.
