Shinya Makabe, also known as Togi Makabe is a Japanese professional wrestler, trained by and currently playing for New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he is a former IWGP heavyweight champion, two-time IWGP Tag Team champion, twice NEVER Open class champion and 6th level extension Single Champion. Beginning in 1997, Makabe first wrestled under his birth name as a heavyweight fighter, before gaining several pounds during a world tour in 2001 and 2002. He changed his name to “Togi” in the tournament G1 Climax in 2004. His position in New Japan increased significantly in 2007, reached the Japanese New Cup final and the G1 Climax semi-final, and challenged Yuji Nagata to the IWGP heavy foe title. After several unsuccessful challenges, Makabe finally won the IWGP heavyweight championship on May 3, 2010, beating Shinsuke Nakamura.
