He was not wearing a pressure suit when he jumped, and the temperature was at -58F. For forty minutes, he was buffeted by hail, thunder, and bolts of lightning. The ordeal caused him to go into immediate frostbite, and the depressurization caused him to bleed from the eyes, mouth, and ears. He eventually landed in a forest in North Carolina, where he was transported to a hospital. He would later write The Man Who Rode the Thunder, detailing his harrowing experiences.
