Pilot and author known for being one of two people who survived falling from a cumulonimbus thunderstorm cloud. He served as a pilot for the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. In 1959, he was flying between Massachusetts and South Carolina when he experienced complete engine failure. His elevation was 47,000 feet when he was forced to parachute from the plane. He was not wearing a pressure suit when he jumped, and the temperature was at -58F. For forty minutes, he was buffeted by hail, thunder, and bolts of lightning. The ordeal caused him to go into immediate frostbite, and the depressurization caused him to bleed from the eyes, mouth, and ears. He eventually landed in a forest in North Carolina, where he was transported to a hospital. He would later write The Man Who Rode the Thunder, detailing his harrowing experiences.
