Baruch Spinoza is a Dutch Sephardic philosopher of Portuguese origin. One of the first Enlightenment thinkers and critics of the modern Bible, including modern conceptions of self and the universe, he is considered one of the great theorists of philosophy. Inspired by the revolutionary ideas of René Descartes, Spinoza became a leading philosophical figure of the Dutch Golden Age. Spinoza's first name, meaning "good luck", varies according to language. In Hebrew, its full name is written as ברוך שפינוזה. In the Netherlands, he uses the Portuguese name Bento. In his Latin and Dutch writings, he used Latin: Benedictus de Spinoza. Spinoza was raised in the Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam. He developed controversial ideas regarding the authenticity of the Hebrew Scriptures and the nature of the Holy Spirit.

Dutch philosopher noted for his rationalist beliefs that paved the way for the Enlightenment ideals of the 18th century. His most well-known work, Ethics, was published after his death and placed on the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books.
