Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao FRS, also known as C. N. R. Rao, is an Indian chemist who mainly works in the chemistry of solids and structures. He holds honorary doctorates from 60 universities around the world and is the author of approximately 1,600 research publications and 51 books. He is described as a scientist who has won every possible award in his field except the Nobel Prize. An early growing child, Rao received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mysore University at the age of seventeen and a Master of Science degree from Banaras Hindu University at the age of nineteen. He received his doctorate from Purdue University at the age of twenty-four. He was the youngest lecturer when he joined the Indian Institute of Science in 1959. After moving to the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, he returned to IISc, eventually becoming director of the Institute from 1984 to 1994 He is the President of the Prime Minister. of the Scientific Advisory Board of India from 1985 to 1989 and from 2005 to 2014 .

He received various scientific prizes for his work in the field of solid-state chemistry, including the Marlow Medal, the Hughes Medal, and the August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann Medal.
