Michael Fred Phelps II is a former American competitive swimmer and the most successful and decorated Olympic athlete of all time, with a total of 28 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time record for Olympic gold medals, Olympic gold medals in individual events and Olympic medals in individual events. Winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Phelps broke American swimmer Mark Spitz's 1972 record for the top seven spots at all of the Olympics. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Phelps won a record eight medals of all colors at the Olympics winning 6 gold and 2 bronze. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps won four gold and two silver, and at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he won five gold and one silver. This made him the most successful athlete of the Olympics in the fourth consecutive Olympic Games.
