David Rice Atchison is a mid-19th century US senator from Missouri. He served as Acting President of the United States Senate for six years. Atchison served as a major general in the Missouri State Militia in 1838 during the Mormon War in Missouri and as a Confederate Brigade Commander during the American Civil War under Major General Sterling Price in the Home Guard Missouri. He is best known for claiming that for 24 hours - from Sunday, March 4, 1849 to Monday noon - he could have been the interim president of the United States. However, this belief has been rejected by almost all historians, researchers and biographers. Atchison, owner of several slaves and a plantation, is a prominent slavery activist and Border Ruffian leader, deeply committed to violence against abolitionists and other liberalists in the "Bleeding Kansas" event.

After newly-elected president Zachary Taylor refused to be sworn in on a Sunday, he was named Acting President of the United States for one day (March 4, 1849). From 1844 to 1855, he served as a US Senator for Missouri.
