Edward Wilmot Blyden is a Liberian educator, writer, diplomat and politician who primarily operates in West Africa. Born in Denmark's West Indies, he joined a wave of black immigrants from the Americas migrating to the country. Blyden worked as a teacher for five years in Britain's West African colony Sierra Leone in the early 20th century. His writings on all-Africanism have become influential across West Africa, gaining attention in countries like the United States. He believes Renaissanceism is a model for what he calls Ethiopianism and that African Americans can return to Africa and help rebuild the continent. Blyden was recognized at a young age for his talent and conduct; he was educated and mentored by John Knox, an American Protestant minister in Sankt Thomas, who encouraged him to continue his education in the United States. In 1850, Blyden was refused admission to the three northern theological seminaries on the grounds of his race.

Writer and politician best known for serving as Liberia's ambassador and for his engagement with African communities around the world. He was the Liberian Secretary of State and Minister of the Interior at the same time.
