Hilda Doolittle is an American poet, novelist and memoirist, linked to a group of pioneering fantasy poets of the early 20th century, including Ezra Pound and Richard Aldington. She published under the pseudonym H.D. Hilda was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1886, and raised just outside of Philadelphia in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and attended Bryn Mawr College. She moved to London in 1911, where she played a central role in the emerging Fantasy movement at the time. Young and charismatic, she was aided by the modern poet Ezra Pound, who was instrumental in the construction of her career. From 1916 to 1917, she was the literary editor of the Egoist newspaper, while her poetry was published in English and transatlantic magazines. During World War I, H.D. suffered the death of his brother and the breakdown of his marriage to the poet Richard Aldington, and these events weighed heavily on his later poetry.

H.D. was an avant-garde, Imagist poet and author who published poetry volumes such as Hymen and The God under the pen name H.D. The Sword Went Out to Sea and Palimpsest are two of her written masterpieces.
