Sir Joseph John Thomson is an English physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, credited with the discovery of the electron, the first subatomic particle discovered. His experiments to determine the nature of positively charged particles, with Francis William Aston, were the first application of mass spectrometry and led to the development of mass spectrometry. Thomson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 for his work on conductivity in gases.
