Joseph John Thomson
Sir Joseph John Thomson is an English physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, credited with the discovery of the electron, the first subatomic particle discovered. In 1897, Thomson showed that cathode rays were made up of previously unknown negatively charged particles, which he calculated to have objects much smaller than atoms and with a very large charge-to-mass ratio. Thomson is also credited with discovering the first evidence of the isotope of a stable element in 1913, as part of his discovery of the composition of channel rays. His experiments to determine the nature of positively charged particles, with Francis William Aston, were the first application of mass spectrometry and led to the development of mass spectrometry. Thomson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 for his work on conductivity in gases.
