Mihajlo Idvorski Pupin is a Serbian physicist, chemical physicist, and philanthropist. Pupine is best known for its many patents, including a way to significantly extend long-distance telephone communications by placing the charging coils at predetermined intervals along the line. Pupine was a founding member of the National Aviation Advisory Committee on March 3, 1915, which later became NASA, and he helped found the American Mathematical Association and the American Physical Society. In 1924, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his autobiography. Pupin has been elected president or vice-president of the highest scientific and technical organizations, such as the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Radio, and the Association for American Advances in Science.
