He is best remembered for his roles in Red River by Howard Hawks, The Heir to William Wyler, A Place in the Sun by George Stevens, I Confess by Alfred Hitchcock, From Here to Eternity by Fred Zinnemann, The Young Lions by Edward Dmytryk, Judgment by Stanley Kramer in Nuremberg and The Misfits by John Huston. Along with Marlon Brando and James Dean, Clift is one of the original method actors in Hollywood; he was one of the first actors invited to study at Actors Studio alongside Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan. He also made the rare decision not to sign a contract after arriving in Hollywood, but only after the success of his first two films. It has been described as "a power difference that will continue to shape the star-studio relationship for the next 40 years."

This actor appeared in The Young Lions and made a great performance in From Here to Eternity. His portrayal of the victim-hero archetype was perhaps best depicted in A Place in the Sun and I Confess.
