Ruth Alston Brown is an American actress, singer, songwriter and actress, sometimes referred to as the "Queen of R&B". She was known to bring her pop style to R&B music in a series of Atlantic Records hits in the 1950s, such as "So Long", "Teardrops from My Eyes" and "He Treats Your Daughter. Mean". Because of these contributions, Atlantic is known as “the house that Ruth built”. Brown was the Outstanding Artist in 1993 to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After a resurgence that began in the mid-1970s and culminated in the 1980s, Brown used his influence to lobby for musicians' royalty and contract rights; These efforts led to the creation of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. His performance in the Broadway musical Black and Blue won Brown the Tony Award, and the recording of the original cast won a Grammy. Brown received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. In 2017, Brown was honored at the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

She is best known for her R&B hits"Teardrops from My Eyes,""Mambo Baby,""Lucky Lips,""Oh What a Dream", and"(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean", as well as her Tony Award-winning performance in the Broadway musical Black and Blue and her contributions to the production's Grammy-winning cast recording.
