He started his career at FC Basel, then at many other clubs in Switzerland, France and Germany before returning to his hometown club, where he won the Swiss Super League title for four seasons. including a double with the Swiss Cup in 2010 and 2012. Frei is the Swiss national football team's all-time top-scoring player with 42 goals in 84 games, and is also his all-time sixth most-picked player. He has represented the country at two European UEFA Championships and several World Cups.
