Arthur Bertram Modell is an American businessman, businessman and owner of the National Rugby League. He owned the Cleveland Browns franchise for 35 years and founded the Baltimore Ravens franchise, which he owned for nine years. Taking control of the Browns franchise in 1961, Modell was a key figure helping promote the NFL and was initially famous in Cleveland for his active role in the community and his efforts to improve the team. However, he took some controversial steps during his tenure, including the sacking of Paul Brown, the franchise's first coach of the same name. In 1995, Modell faced widespread contempt in Cleveland when he attempted to move the Browns to Baltimore. While the Browns name could eventually remain in Cleveland, Modell retained the contracts of all Browns employees and moved the franchise to Baltimore, establishing Raven in 1996 as the nominal expansion group.
