Carolyn Drake is an American photographer living in Vallejo, California. She works on long-term photography projects, looking to question outstanding historical stories and imagine alternatives to them. Her work explores the community and the interactions within it, as well as the barriers and connections between people, places and patterns of perception. Her practice has involved collaboration and through it collage, drawing, sewing, text and found images have been incorporated into her work. She is interested in breaking the traditional divide between author and subject, the real and virtual, entrenched binary challenge. Drake's extensive work on the peoples of Central Asia and Xinjiang in China is covered in two self-published books, Two Rivers and The Wild Dove. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art presented a private exhibition of the latter work and acquired the original collection of the project in 2018. Drake is a member of Magnum Photos.
