Edgar Hovhannisyan
Edgar Hovhannisyan, Hovhannisian or Oganesian is an Armenian composer, professor of composition at the Yerevan State Conservatory, People's Artist of the Soviet Union. He graduated from the Yerevan State Conservatory in 1953, then pursued graduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory where he worked under the direction of the famous Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. He was director of the State Opera and Ballet State in Yerevan in 1962-1968. Hovhannisyan is considered by many to be one of the most influential Armenian composers of the twentieth century. He is the author of ballets including "Janna D'Ark", "Sulamif" and "Marmar". He has also experimented with various musical styles, including neoclassical, folk and even jazz - such as in "Concert Variations for Saxophone and Jazz Orchestra", opera, various works of concert music and many pieces of music by movies.
