Harold Hotelling was an American mathematical statistician and influential economic theorist, best known for his Hotelling Law, Hotelling's Lemma, and Hotelling's Rule in economics, as well as Hotelling's T-distribution in statistics. He has also developed and named key component analysis methods widely used in finance, statistics and IT. He was associate professor of mathematics at Stanford University from 1927 to 1931, faculty member at Columbia University from 1931 to 1946, and professor of mathematical statistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from five 1946 until his death. A street in Chapel Hill named after him. In 1972, he received the North Carolina Prize for his contributions to science.
