John Caldwell Calhoun is an American politician and political theorist from South Carolina who held many important positions, including the Seventh Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832. and was a staunch advocate of slavery and the interests of the South white when its population was larger than that of the North. He began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and supporter of a strong national government and protective tariffs. By the late 1820s his perspective had radically changed and he became one of the leading advocates of state rights, limited, neutralizing, and opposed to high tariffs. He saw the acceptance of these policies by the North as a condition for the South to remain in the Union. His beliefs and warnings strongly influenced the secession of the Southern Union in 1860–61. Calhoun began his political career with the 1810 election to the House of Representatives .
