He became editor-in-chief of The Sun in 1981, when the publication was considered Britain's largest circulation newspaper. After leaving The Sun in 1994, he was appointed to managerial positions in satellite television and other broadcasting establishments, as well as in a number of publishing companies. After a brief stint as a columnist for The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph, MacKenzie returned to The Sun in a similar role. His contract was terminated by mutual consent in May 2017 after being suspended.
