He is a dynamic businessman, has had numerous business ventures in Africa, Asia and Latin America and is fluent in Mandarin. Darby is the son of longtime Liberal Congressman Douglas Darby and attended Newington College. A former military officer and performer, he was active in politics in the 1970s. His first candidacy was a liberal candidate for the Labor Party headquarters in Werriwa during the elections. Confederation in 1974, then candidate for Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. In 1975 Darby was one of the organizers of the Interstate Aid Association of Australia - Timor, based in Dili. He was present when a Royal Australian Air Force plane was hijacked in Baucau by soldiers from the Timorese Democratic Union who surrendered to him and demanded to be evacuated to Australia.
