William Sydney Porter, better known by the pseudonym O. Henry, is an American writer. Porter was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He moved to Texas in 1882, where he met his wife, Athol Estes, with whom he had two children. In 1902, after the death of his wife, Porter moved to New York, where he soon remarried. It was while in New York City that Porter's most intense period of writing took place, with Porter writing 381 short stories. Porter's works include "Gift of the Mage", "Duplication of the Hargraves" and "The Red Chief's Ransom". His stories are known for their sudden endings and witty tales. Porter also writes poetry and non-fiction. Porter's legacy includes the O. Henry Prize, an annual award for outstanding news.
