Oliver hated neoclassical cuisine, and liked the rich ingredients favored by the chefs in Gascony in his hometown. Oliver, born in Langon in the Bordeaux region of France, is the son and grandson of a chef. His grandmother gave him his first cooking training when he was a boy, and he began his apprenticeship as a chef under his father's guidance at the age of 15. For more than 35 years, he owned the Grand Vefour rue de Beaujolais in the Palais-Royal district. His famous clients include politicians such as Winston Churchill and André Malraux, writers like Albert Camus and Georges Simenon, industrialists and financiers Henry Ford and David Rockefeller. Aga Khan, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco are among his highly regarded clients, as are Jean Cocteau and Colette.
