Robert Burton is an English writer and student at Oxford University, best known for his encyclopedia The Anatomy of Melancholy. Born in 1577 into a well-off aristocratic family, Burton attended two high schools and enrolled in the University of Brasenose, Oxford in 1593, at the age of 15. and that includes early transfer to Christ Church. Burton received his MA and BD degrees, and in 1607 he qualified as a tutor. As early as 1603, Burton was infatuated with his earliest literary interests at Oxford, including several Latin poems, a previously lost play performed and criticized by King James I himself. , and his only surviving play: a scholarly satire called Philosophaster. This work, although less appreciated than Burton's masterpiece, is notable for "receiving more attention than most other surviving examples of university theater."
