Seymour Lipton is an American Abstract Expressionist sculptor. He was a member of the widely recognized New York School in the 1950s. Initially he trained as a dentist, but focused on sculpture since 1932. His first media choices were moved from wood to lead then to copper, and he is best known for his work on metal. He made a number of technical innovations, including welding nickel-silver bars onto Monel foil to create rust-resistant shapes. His works are included in the Phillips Collection, the Albright - Knox Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. His Pioneer, Catacombs and Guardians are being lent to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and are currently on display as part of the Monument, the public art program at the University of Texas at Austin.
