Willard Frank Libby is an American physicist best known for his role in developing radioactive carbon dating in 1949, a process that revolutionized archeology and paleontology. For his contributions to this process development team, Libby received the 1960 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Graduated in chemistry in 1931 at the University of California at Berkeley, from which he obtained his doctorate in 1933 research into radioactive elements and develop building material sensitivity. Geiger counter for low natural and artificial radioactivity measurements. During World War II, he worked in the Manhattan Project's Alternative Alloy Materials Laboratory at Columbia University, developing the diffusion process for uranium enrichment. After the war, Libby accepted a professorship at the University of Chicago's Institute for Nuclear Research, where he developed a technique for dating organic compounds using carbon 14.
